June 9 - July 9, 2003 - Germany
The complete FIFA World Cup match schedule will be published in 2004. Only then will the venues of the quarter and semi-finals be confirmed. Munich is the favorite to host the opening game, while Berlin will stage the final.
Just as in France in 1998 and Korea/Japan in 2002, 32 teams will take part in Germany 2006. Germany will have automatic qualification as hosts, but Brazil, the winner of the tournament in 2002, will still have to qualify due to a recent change in policies.

History of the World Cup
On May 26th, 1928 the World Cup was born. History was changed forever as five European countries plus a chosen host of Uruguay planned to hold the first tournament on May 18th, 1929 at the congress of Barcelona. Uruguay was chosen as the 1st host based on their recent outstanding Olympic record.
The only European teams involved were France, Belgium, Yugoslavia, and Romania. Other European teams argued that the expected trip time was far too long and couldn't realistically leave their respective leagues for that amount of time. Other than Uruguay six additional south American teams participated, including Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Peru. Wrapping up the final 13 for 1930 were Mexico and the United States and the U.S. was utilizing a heavily Scottish roster for the event.
The first game kicked off on July 13th, 1930 in Pocitos Stadium where France beat Mexico 4 to 1. In the end it was Uruguay who defeated Argentina 4-2 for the first world cup final victory.
